The Hot Wheels Baja Breaker was first released in 1978 and has been produced in more than 50 variations. This black model from the 1984 Real Riders series – another of my estate sale tub rescues – is missing most of its A-Team-inspired orange stripe. Early versions of the Baja Breaker, like this one, have a plastic hood which opens to reveal the unpainted metal engine tucked inside. But I’ve found that the little plastic tab that holds the engine closed can get brittle over time, so I’m reluctant to open it up just in case it breaks off and never closes again.
Other Baja Breakers in my collection include a nice example of the 1978 first release, the 1979 Motocross Team van from the Scene Machines series, a green model from the 1980 Mainline series, the orange version from 1983, the 1984 blackwall variation of A-Team inspired black and red model, a mint example from the 1989 Trailbusters series and a China-cast late-blackwall version from 1997.
